National History

Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity is an all-male college social fraternity founded on June 28, 1920 at University of Central Missouri. The fraternity was born out of the desires and aspirations of seventeen men in the belief that all men are social creatures and that friendships of college men are lasting ones. It rose as a result of friendships made while in the service of their country during World War I in France.

In accordance with the founding of Sigma Tau Gamma Fratenity at Central Missouri State Teachers College, the fraternity created new chapters on the campuses surrounding teachers colleges. Since the fraternity's beginnings in 1920, they have since spread to more than 140 university campuses across the United States.

Local History

Initially established on the Slippery Rock Campus in the 1960’s, The Beta Tau Chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma took on it’s current form upon it’s reformation in 1992 when thirty-one men colonized and later chartered with the national organization of Sigma Tau Gamma Inc.

One would not describe the path taken by the subsequent two hundred and sixty-three members as smooth sailing. In spite of the rocky roads and adversity they pressed on to eventually become one of the strongest organizations on the Slippery Rock University campus.

Ask any member of the Alumni Association and they will tell you years of oral tradition and stories about The Castle, The Chateau, The Palace, The Ville, The Crime Scene, and the Legend of Scoop. Some of the stories are not for virgin ears, and some will never see the light of day.

The traditions and relationships are what keeps this organization strong and the epitome of Brotherhood. A Brotherhood not of blood, but one forged in the mind, memories and experiences of its members.

If not for the care and oversight of a handful of members; Tom McPherson, Scoop Gillespie, Mike Dokmanovich, Teddy Wright, Mike Biskup and many others who gave their time, money, and reputations for a cause they believed in, this organization would have fallen from grace a long time ago.

One would be hard press to find a closer knit group of men on any campus in this country. The past of this organization which seemed insurmountable at the time is purely what makes it work and prosper. Overcoming a debt, poor reputation, resolving long-seeded issues, and facing new issues, both social and economic was the story from day one.

The organization is the sum of all its parts. Those parts are influenced by tradition and legacy. A tradition and legacy that must be treated with the delicacy of a new born child for it will mold and determine the path of the future Sig Tau’s.
